Mawarid’s Mining operations are located in
the Al Batinah region of Oman. Copper Mining
has been carried out in the Al Batinah
region for approximately 6000 years and
Mawarid is taking its place as the most
recent participant in a long held tradition.
Mawarid’s Oman Copper Mining Operations at a
glance:
-
Ore occurs as shallow open pitable copper
massive sulphide deposits that dip
moderately from 0-20 meters below the
surface to a maximum depth of about 100
meters below surface.
-
Mines have a cut-off grade of 0.3% copper
and average grades of 2-3% copper. To date,
the mining operations have produced a
combined total of over 2.5 million metric
tonnes of ore at an average stripping ratio
of 4.6 since inception..
-
The load and haul operation is owner
operated.
-
Mawarid has a fleet of 12 X CAT 771D dump
trucks, 3 X CAT 772D dump trucks, 3 X CAT
365 back hoe excavators, 1 X CAT 365 front
shovel, and 1 X CAT 385 back hoe excavator.
Ancillary equipment include 2 X CAT D10T
track dozers, 2 X CAT D8R track dozers,1 X
CAT 323 rockbreaker, 2 X CAT 824H wheel
dozers, 2 X CAT 980H wheel loaders, 1 X CAT
16M motor grader, 1 X CAT 140H motor grader
and 2 X MAN water trucks.
-
Drilling and blasting operations are
outsourced to a local contractor with over
30 years experience working in Oman.
-
Copper ore is hauled using standard road
trucks to Mawarid’s Lasail concentrator
which is located 20 km west of Sohar This is
contracted to a local reputable contractor.

Shinas Mine
The Shinas mine is an open cut operation
located about 80kms north from Sohar close
to the main highway between Oman and UAE.
Ore production started in Shinas Pit in July
2008 and to date over a million metric
tonnes of ore have been mined, with over
half a million metric tonnes still to be
mined according to the current pit design.
Recent drilling in and around Shinas pit
resulted in an increase in the Shinas
resource and there is scope to expand the
pit in the future.

Hatta Mines
The Hatta mines are located about 85 km
north from Sohar close to the main highway
between Oman and UAE. Three separate massive
sulphide deposits are being exploited in the Hatta area: Hatta, Hatta Extended and Hatta
South.
Hatta Pit was exhausted in January 2009
having produced a over 1,4 million metric
tonnes of copper ore. Operations at Hatta
South pit commenced in May 2009 and the pit
is now in full production. Pre-stripping of
the Hatta Extended Pit commenced September
2009.
